Comprehensive Contractors Insurance Tailored for Your Needs

Mutual Benefit understands the unique risks you face as a contractor/skilled craftsman. We offer affordable contractors insurance in PA and MD that allows you to combine a wide range of vital property and liability coverages into one policy, saving you money. An added bonus is our customized Contractor’s Tailored Coverage endorsement, which is automatically included with the package. It’s designed for your specific needs and provides options to help you meet contractual requests from others, such as general contractors:

What’s Included in Our Contractor Insurance Coverage?

Automatic Installation Coverage

Provides $2,500 of installation coverage when you are transporting, installing and testing equipment, so there’s no need to purchase a separate installation insurance “floater.”

Property Left in Your Care

Includes up to $25,000 of coverage for property belonging to others that is left in your care, custody or control.

Additional Insured Coverage

Your coverage is primary and noncontributory for others who ask or require that they be added as an “additional insured” during joint projects when you agree to such coverage in a written contract.

Full Limit of Coverage per Project

Your full limit of coverage applies to each designated construction project. Regardless of the amount of claims that might have been paid for a previous project, the full limit of coverage will still be available for your next project during the policy period.

Waiver of Subrogration

A waiver of subrogation is included in the package when you agree in writing prior to any loss or damage occurring while on a job.

Pollutant Cleanup and Removal

Most basic liability policies provide little coverage for cleanup and removal of pollutants. Our package comes equipped with $10,000 of coverage for such a mishap at a specific, described premises.

Boost your coverage even more for a nominal fee

For a relatively small fee, you can add Mutual Benefit’s Enhanced Contractor’s Tailored Coverage (ECTC) to your package to receive even higher limits of coverage, as well as protection against a wider range of potential loss situations. For example, the ECTC increases installation coverage to $10,000.

Pennsylvania Contactors Insurance

Contractors in Pennsylvania face unique risks and requirements that make the right insurance coverage critical. State regulations often require contractors to carry specific types of insurance, such as General Liability and Workers’ Compensation. For example:

  • General Liability Insurance in PA is important for protecting against property damage or injuries that could occur on the job.
  • Workers’ Compensation Insurance is mandatory for businesses with employees. This covers medical costs and lost wages from workplace injuries.

In addition to meeting state requirements, contractors in Pennsylvania often encounter other risks like severe weather. At Mutual Benefit, we understand the unique risks that contractors in PA face, and we’re here to help you prepare for them. For more information, visit our Pennsylvania business insurance page.

Maryland Contractors Insurance

Maryland has a similar set of rules and regulations. General Liability Insurance is again commonly required for many contracting jobs. Workers’ Compensation is mandatory if you have employees. Maryland also has its own unique set challenges including:

  • Increased exposure to flooding.
  • Contractors working in densely populated areas must ensure they have adequate liability coverage to protect against claims related to urban job sites.

Mutual Benefit’s Contractors Insurance offers the flexibility to meet Maryland-specific needs. For more information, visit our Maryland business insurance page.

Common Questions about Contractors Insurance

What is Contractor Insurance?

Contractor insurance is a specialized type of business insurance designed to protect contractors and skilled tradespeople from financial risks. It usually includes coverage for property damage, bodily injury, workplace accidents, equipment theft and other liabilities that may occur during a project.

Do I need workers’ compensation insurance as an independent contractor?

Requirements vary by state, but in Pennsylvania and Maryland, independent contractors may need workers’ compensation if they employ others. Even if not legally required, having this coverage can protect you from medical expenses and lost wages due to on-the-job injuries.

Are subcontractors covered under contractors insurance?

Subcontractors are generally not covered under a contractor’s insurance policy unless specifically added as insured. Contractors should verify that subcontractors carry their own insurance, including liability and workers’ compensation. Adding subcontractors to your policy as additional insured may fulfill contractual obligations and provide broader coverage.
